Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic autoimmune disease primarily affecting synovial joints, typically presenting with symmetric polyarthritis of small peripheral joints such as the metacarpophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints. It affects approximately 1% of the adult population and is more prevalent among women.
